Sunset Rubdown is to Wolf Parade what Ugly Casanova was to Modest Mouse, a chance for the beautifully weird to get beautifully weirder. Spencer Krug delivers a masterpiece of sparse, soul-piercing might. While this may be on of the most angular albums I have ever heard, it is also one of my favorites. Here is a link to the first track on Shut Up I Am Dreaming, Stadiums and Shrines II. This link leads to the band's myspace page where you can listen to THE TOTALLY AMAZING AND EPIC ENDING PIECE TO THE ALBUM, Shut Up I'm Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings. Seriously, this song has the same depth and texture as a tide gently coming in to drown a village. On this page, you can also hear a rare early version of Wolf Parade's I'll Believe in Anything, an older version of Sunset Rubown's Snake's Got A Leg III, and another rare Sunset track.
As for the latest (and only truly listenable) album, it has many twists and turns. From the track you heard above, the album saunters on to They Took a Vote and Said No, which sounds a little like poppy politicized Muppets on acid. Us Ones In Between, the next song, is one of my favorite of the year. It's lyrics are gripping and incredibly poetic in a bleak and disturbing way. The slow throb of that song is followed up by the uber-bizarre "doo-doo-doodoodoo"s of I'm Sorry I Sang On Your Hands That Have Been In The Grave. Killer cut. The journey picks up tempo at the philosophically pertinent Snakes Got A Leg III, then cuts back for the mutated Elliott-Smithesque The Empty Threats Of Little Lord. This song is incredible. It sounds like a victory party thrown by Conor Oberst's evil twin after breaking his brother's arm in a hybrid songwriting/armwrestling contest. Then comes the early-Floydish Swimming. it acts as a bridge piece to introduce the epic ending to the album. The first half of this is the sprawling genderbending anthem, The Men Are Called Horsemen There. Then the climax begins with a short instrumental segue entitled, Q-Chord. This leads into the armageddon journey through Shut Up I Am Dreaming Of Places Where Lovers Have Wings. It will leave you breathless if you give it a chance.
So, if you enjoyed Wolf Parade last week, or are just looking for something new. Don't wait. This is it.
